Hot TEA on a Roller Coaster Ride!!!

HHHEEEEYYYY y’all the weather is changing, and you know it's time for some warm Tea! I’ve never had warm tea before but I'm ready to try it with you guys while we spill this new “Tea”. So, remember I told you that I had something new coming? Well guess what! I’m so excited to spill the tea today. I can't wait for this tea to get ready. So, as you come in be sure to grab all of your essentials, and this week, I decided to bring some warm muffins. We have blueberry, banana nut, and of course the original flavor. Be sure to get comfortable because this will be a roller coaster ride of tea. Before we start, ask yourself, “Would Cluster Problems be a great idea to do for NT?” If you said yes, welcome to the roller coaster. And if you said no, hopefully by the end of this tea session you will be ready to take a ride on this roller coaster with us. As always students start with their “fist” to their heart because they are ready to start. Now this week we are not doing dot images; we will be doing Cluster Problems. So think of a way you can solve 15 + 15? While you take a minute to think about it, I'm going to post some of our Pre-Service teachers' responses.

  • Student one: I decomposed 15 and 15 to 10+10 + 5+5= 30

  • Student two: 15 x 2= 30

  • Student three: 15 + 15= 30

So, now that I have listed their ideas, did you come up with any of these ideas? If not, leave your answer in the comment section below. I told you I had some good tea coming, go ahead and take you another sip of that good ole tea. Round two for the roller coaster ride. Hopefully the people who don’t think this is a good idea for NT would join this ride now. As always, we put our “fist” to our hearts because we are ready to start, this time around think about how you would solve 15 + 16? As always, I’m going to post Pre- Service teachers' ideas below.

  • Student one: Decomposed 16 to 15 which is now 15 + 15 + 1=31.
  • Student two: Decomposed 15 to 10 + 5 and decomposed 16 to 10 + 6 which she added 10 + 10 then 5+ 6 to get 31.

Did you use any of these ways to get 31? If yes, great! If not, leave me a comment below. I'm always open to suggestions on finding multiple ways to get 31. Round three of the Roller will take off in a few seconds. Take a minute to adjust yourself and get comfortable. Hopefully, we have more people joining this time around. This tea is really good. Take a moment to take a sip or refill your cup if needed because this tea is delicious! Round three takes a minute and figure out how you would solve 14 + 14? I hope you haven't been using a calculator this whole entire time because if so, I’m going to get you lol! We are using our mental capability to solve these problems.  Below are our Pre-Service Teachers responses. Be sure to comment your answer below in the comments.

  • Student one: 14 x 2= 28

  • Student two: Decomposed 14 to 10 + 4 two times and added 10 + 10+ 4 +4 to give you 28

Lastly, now that we have done three rounds of the roller coaster, I hope we have changed everybody's mindset who didn’t think this was a great idea. As we get ready to take our final ride before you drink the last of your tea save it until we stop. This time we have our very own Pre-Service Teacher, Ms. Angel Scott, who led the last session. She's a junior here at Alabama A&M University. I’m pretty sure you weren't looking for this to come at you! This is her very first time teaching NT. She did a very outstanding job. She led the class with our “fist” to our heart because we are ready to start. She gave the problem 14 + 15, now take a minute because we have some defending going on during this session. Decide whether you're defending 29 this time or 27. Leave me an answer in the comments below. I'm counting on you to comment. If you picked 29, then you're correct. Below are Pre- Service teachers' answers but be sure to leave a comment on how you would solve this problem.

  • Student one:  10 + 10 + 4 + 5= 29

  • Student two: 14 x 2= 28 + 1=29

Did you come up with some of the ways? If not, leave your comment below.

Now this Number Talks deals with Doubles and Doubles plus One. That is, we add the same number twice and then add one to that number. When thinking about adding two numbers, think about how one number can be added twice (double) and then add 1 to the sum. Like 25 + 26. Just add 25 + 25 to get 50 and then add 1. The total will be 51. This is a great strategy to make adding numbers more friendly and efficient.

I hope we have everyone on board with us now to join the roller coaster because we have more coming at you next week. Please be sure to tune in because you don’t want to miss out on this good tea. Also, please leave us a comment below because we are counting on you, and have a great rest of the week.

  1. The tea is hot, and the muffins are tasty! I love the cluster problems because although I may see it one way, someone else sees it another way. The beautiful thing is we both get the same answer. Angel, you did a great job! - Kiara Thomas

    1. The tea is steaming and delicious! You did a great job with your numbers talk and I got the same answer. I did the friendly 10s first by adding 10+10= 20 and then I added the 4+5=9 making it 20+9=29.

  3. Whew, this tea is thick, and the muffins are an easy complement. On another note, let's dive into the real tea about me doing my first number talks. Truthfully, I was partially nervous, but my teacher and peers made it easy. Thank you all for actively engaging and keeping the tea brewing!

I LOVE the progression of the number strings chosen for this number talk! For the first string (15 + 15) I used compensation to make a benchmark number! I subtracted 5 from one of the 15s and added it to the other to create a new problem of 20 + 10. I added those together to get 30! 🤗

  8. *Sips tea. ☕️ GREAT job leading and scripting the number talk Angel! You did an awesome job capturing your “students” strategies! 🥳

  9. Angel you did a good job. One way I saw 14+15 was just by seeing that both of the numbers are small. So I just did 5+4 =9 and 1+1=2 together 2 and 9 are 29.

  10. The tea was hot and sweet with blueberry muffins. Angel you did great job. I like how you understood the process and kept track of your classmates feedbacks on the board. I enjoy number talks because it way to demonstrate to students that it multiple ways to approach solve a problem. It’s not only valuable learning experience, but also fun and engaging way to learn. It’s a good way for students engaging in discussions and sharing their thought procedure. Students have the opportunity to listen to and learn from their peers, creating supportive and inclusive learning environment while participating number talks.

    1. The way I saw 14 + 14 is by break down 14s into 10 and 4. I add the 10s together like this 10+10=20. Then I multiply like 4 x 2=8. Next I add the 20 +8 came out with 28.

  11. Ms. Angel did a great job conducting her first number talk to the class! She made it easy to understand and kept track of the students answers and how they saw each problem. For the first Number talk problem 15+15, I knew that 5+5 = 10, and then that 1+1+1 is 3, which equals 30.

I love doing the number talks because it’s so important to show students that we might all work the problem out differently but we can still get the right answer. Angel did a great job! For the first number talk problem that was 15+15, I knew that 15x2=30. Therefore, I knew that 15+15 =30. -Krista Sikes

  13. Angel, you did an amazing job! Your content was very engaging and understanding. For the number talk, I chose to do 15 + 15= 30. I broke this down by doing 10 + 10 = 20 + 5 + 5 + 10, so 20 + 10= 30.

  14. Angel, you did an amazing job during you number talk. I love that you understood and kept track of the students feedback on the board.
    The way I saw 15 + 15 is I decomposed both 15s into 10 + 5 + 10 + 5. I then added 10 + 10 = 20 then 5 + 5 = 10. After I added 20 + 10 to get 30.

  15. The tea is still hot, and I'm about to make it scorching. I choose to defend 14+15 =29. The way that I saw this sum was by decomposing 14 into 10+4 and 15 into 10 +5. Then, I combined the two tens to equate to 20 and combined the 5+4 to equate to 9. Additionally, I added the sum of both of my totals to get 29.

  16. The tea is steaming hot, just like I like it. I choose to defend. 29, 14 +15 How I saw it was 15 + 15 = 30. Then I said 30 -1 = 29. I went back and subtracted because of 14. I enjoyed my tea and I hope everyone else does as well. -Katelyn Ramsey

  17. Angel did a very nice job delivering the number talk for the day. I will be defending 14+15=29. I saw 10+10 first that equals 20. Then I added 5+4 together which equals 9. After that I added 20+9 to get the final answer of 29.

  18. Angel you did a great job doing your number talk. It was fun and engaging! I will defend 29. I knew 15 + 15 = 30. So I took 30 and subtracted it by 1 (30 - 1) and that gave me 29.

  19. Great job Angel! I was very engaged. I'll defend 29. I dropped the 4 and 5 from 14 and 15, added 10+10=20 and then added 4+5 together to get 9. Which makes 9+20=29.

  20. Just the way I like it, the tea is hot. I go for defense. 29 because 14 +15 I calculated it as 15 + 15 = 30. I then stated that 30 – 1 equal 29. Due to 14, I went back and subtracted. I think Angle did a job with voice projection and making everything clearly. MaKayla Prewitt

  21. Excellent Job Angel!!!! I will defend 30. I knew 15 +15 was 30 because I did 10 +10+10 which is 30. I also did 15 times 2 which is 30.

  22. I will defend 30 (15+ 15) I saw a double of 15 which I automatically knew it was 30. I could used a different strategy like decomposing 15 into 10 and 5. Add the two 10's which give me 20 plus the two 5's and get 10 and 20 +10=30.

  23. Hey everyone let's get into this tea!

    I'm going to defend 29. I got 29 because I already know 15+15 is 30,so all I did was subtract 1

    15+15= 30-1=29.

I thought Angel did a good job with the number talks. Very fluent and clear! Nice work!

  24. Yessssss Angel I love it you did a great job!!! I’m going to defend 29 because I know 15+15=30 so I just subtracted 1 which gave me 29.

  25. Straight from the kettle, The number talk was excellent Angel. I will be defending the answer being 29.As for how i saw the problem 15+14, i saw 5+4+ 10+10=29.

  26. We love a good sip of tea! Angel you did great for your first numbers talk of course! For the first number talk, i decomposed both 15s into 10s so i did 10+10=20 plus 5+5=10 so 20+10=30
