Ten Ten in the Shade!!!!
Sorry we missed each other last week with this good ole sweet tea, but we promise to make it up this week. We already have you set up under the shade tree so before sitting down be sure to pick up your cup, fill it up with ice and sweet tea and don’t forget your straw. This week we are coming at you with something new and best believe it's some good ole tea we are about to spill.
Have you ever thought of doing Number Talks with tens of frames with your students? If not, it's ok once we finish spilling the tea of the many answers our Pre-service teachers gave us. Maybe we could encourage you to try it with your students. So this week we started with ten frames, and as always we start with our fist to our heart because we are ready to start. Starting off we already had a debate going on for two answers after the image was shown for five seconds 16 and 14. Take the time out and guess which one students decided to defend, as always you're more than welcome to comment below or give an answer of how you would have seen each image. If you decided to pick 16 you're correct! Now that you pick 16 think of a way you will see 16 on a tens frame:
Student one: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16 also 14+2= 16
Student two: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10+6=16
Student three: 5 x 2=10+ 6= 16
Now, I know the wind didn't blow too hard under this shade tree because that was a lot I spilled to you. But go ahead and sip your tea because I have more ahead for you. Be sure to get comfortable! So the second cluster this time we have another defense going on which makes this sweet tea and this shade something serious. Think about how you would see 17 or 18 on a tens frame, as well as think about which answer you would defend:
Student one: 4x3 + 5 vertically 12 + 5=17
Student two: 20-3=17 student was asked how you see this she replied, "there are two tens frames which makes twenty and three is missing.”
Student three: 5+ 5+4+3=17
So, if you picked 17 then you are correct. Now that was a good one! Our preservice teachers are rocking these ten frames. Go ahead and sip some tea because I know you are thirsty for some more. Lastly, we have one more defense to do, don’t be afraid to comment your answers below as always we love your comments. Our numbers this time to defend are 11 and 10, now take a minute sip your tea while you're laying back chilling in the shade and think about which answer you decided to pick. If you decided to pick 11 then you're correct. I know your cup is getting empty but save the little bit you do have to think of how you would have seen 11:
Student one: 2,4,6,8,10+1=11
Student two:4x2+3= 11
Student Three: 3 x 3+ 2=11
