Tea on the “HILL’ Part 2: A New Beginning! by Shanta McVay
Well, Well, prepared to be sick of us! We’ve been gone for a minute, and I know you guys miss this good old “Tea”. We couldn’t stay gone too long because we knew your mouth was getting a little dry. As you know we have a fresh set of students who are juniors and seniors, so you know it’s time to make some “Tea”.
Today, we started off with dot images where the image was
shown for five seconds. Students were asked to put their fists to their hearts because
they were ready to start. After the image was shown students were told how many dots
they saw which was “9”. We asked did anyone had any other answers besides “9”? Students
replied no; they all agreed on 9. Since everyone agreed on 9, we ask how did
you see it? Three students replied which goes as follows:
·
Student one said I saw 4+4 +1=9 to get her answer.
·
Student two said she saw 4 + 5= 9.
·
Student three counted by two’s and added one (2,4,6,8 + 1=9).
Now that
we are done with the first one. Think of some ways you can see nine using dot
images while sipping on your “Tea” because the second part is going to be
interesting.
Now that your tea is cold let me
add you a little ice to make it colder as we proceed to the second part. As
always students had their “fist” to their hearts because they are ready to start,
images were shown for five seconds, and students were asked, how many did you
see? How do you see it? This time around we had two students to give two different
numbers of what they saw. One student said 10, and the other student said 13.
Which makes it good. Take a minute and sip your ice tea and decide which number
you think they defended. Well, since your throat is moisturized now and you
decided to pick the number “10”, then you are correct! This time around can you
believe we had five students? Not just one student but five students to tell
how they came up with the answer “10?
While reading each student’s point of view as
follows, think about how you would have seen 10 in dot images.
·
Student one said 4+4+2= 10
·
Student two said 2,4,6,8,10.
·
Student three said 4+4 going down in a row plus 2 more equals 10. S
·
Student four said 4+2+2+2= 10,
·
Lastly student five said, 5x2=10. She saw 2 groups of 5.
Now, I
know that there are a lot of ways to see ten dots, but the “tea” was really
good. I don’t want to hold you long because you’re out of “tea” but come back
next week to refill your cup and add a straw.
On the first one I saw 4 + 4 then got 8 and added 1 = 9
ReplyDeletefor the second one I got 4 + 4 + 2 = 10
Thank you for number talks I enjoy this.
On the first one I saw 4x2=8 +1=9
ReplyDeleteFor the second one I saw 4,8 +2=10
