Sipping Our Tea with a Fancy Straw!!!!

Welcome back to another spill on The Hill!!! As you come in, please be sure to pick up your straw. This week we have stepped our game up a little bit from last week. Instead of doing two Number Talks, we did three. Before we get started be sure to put some ice in your cup and make sure it’s full. As you already know we always start with our “fist” to our heart because we are ready to start. Student’s were shown dot images for three seconds. Students were asked, “” how many did you see?” “How did you see it?” This time around everyone agreed on “12” but they had many ways of seeing 12 dot images. We had three students to participate which goes as follows:

Student one: 4,4,4 which interpreted as 4 X 3= 12

Student two: I saw the first row of six and automatically knew the second row is six and wrote it as 6 + 6= 12

Student three: I counted by 2’s such as 2,4,6,8,10,12.

While you take a moment to sip, think of a way you would have seen 12 using dot images.  I know our cups look a little fancy now since we added our straws, take a minute and pull yourself together for a second go round.
We always prepare ourselves to start off with our “fist” to our heart because we are ready to start. This time around we have some defending going on! Two students gave two different answers which were 12 and 14. Take a minute and decide which number you think was defended, If you picked 12 then you're correct. Two students decided to tell how they saw 12, While reading how they saw 12, think of a way you would have seen 12:

Student one: four groups of threes 3X4=12

Student two: 6 + 5 to get 11 and add 1 to get 12.

Now, I know that was a lot and your cup is halfway now but be sure to save the best for the last go round. Lastly, we always prepare like always with our fist to our heart because we are ready to start. After the dot images were shown for three seconds, we ended up getting two different answers which is 15 and 14. Pause for a minute and decide which number was picked. If you picked 14 then you're correct. Think of a way you could see 14 while using dot images. Moisturize your throat before we end our talk. This time around three students gave three different ways they saw “14”.:

Student one: 3 X 4= 12 + 2+ 14

Student two: 2,4,6 and then said 6 X 2 + 2= 14

Student three: Two fives on the outside and four in the middle 5 + 5 + 4= 14

After reading all of the students' points of views from class today of how they saw each number using dot images, now it’s your turn!  Please be sure to comment below using the picture above of how you would have seen each number. I’m pretty sure that this will be amazing with all of our results today but be sure to come back next week and chill with us in the shade while we spill more tea.

LEAVE A COMMENT PLEASE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
