More Tea: Doubles/Near Doubles

More Tea on the Hill!!! Doubles/ Near Double

Welcome back to more Tea on the Hill!! As you all know, we have been working on Number Talks for a while now, but it gets better every week. This week we are working on Doubles/ Near- Doubles. You probably wonder what it is while you sip the Arnold Palmer. Take a good sip while I tell you how these Number Talks were mastered by two Pre-Service Teachers, not just one. We have Ms. Davonna a senior here at A&M, and Ms. Cassidy, a Junior here also at A&M. Ms. Davonna sounded a little nervous, but she mastered her part in getting the class to give her the answer to the problem. And, of course, you know we always start off with our fists to the chest because we are ready to start! The problem that was given was 998 + 999, which is 1,997. During this session, everyone agreed, and two ways to get the answer were defined. One of the ways is rounding 998 and 999 and subtracting two from one side and 1 from the other to get the answer. Another way was to decompose the numbers to get the answer and regroup. Now I know your cup is almost halfway finished but don’t drink it too fast. Remember we have Ms. Cassidy up next, who also taught a class today. Ms. Cassidy is familiar with the rules of Number Talks because this is not her first time teaching Number Talks, but her second time teaching it. The problem that was given was 998+998, which is 1996. During her session, students used two methods to get the answer which was rounding and subtracting to get the answer. Students defended this answer by rounding 998 and 998 to 1000, which gives you 2,000 and subtracting four to get 1996 as the answer. Now I know you're probably looking shocked and finished your cup of that good tea, but hang around and come back next week so we can top your cup off with lemon to set the tea off for next week!!
