Delicious Tea on The Hill

Welcome back once again to the Tea on the Hill!

I must admit this Tea has been delicious lately. I brought some lemon to put on our cup as we sat back in the shade and enjoyed this ice-cold Arnold Palmer. While we gossip more about The Hill because we are doing Place Values this week. Once again, we have two students presenting again, and this time you're going to be a little shocked when I tell you who presented. Ms. Arianna Fletcher, Miss Alabama Agriculture & Mechanical University is an elementary education major, Pre-service Teacher, and a Senior here on campus. I know that Tea was good and cold going down because you weren't expecting that. I know you weren't. It’s okay; she presented today on place values which was her first time presenting. The problem she presented to the class today was 360 + 275, which is 635.

She asked who would like to defend the answer, but before she asked, another student said, “ my answer is 615” then the student came back and said, nevermind my answer is 635 as well. So everyone agreed to 635 as the answer to move forward with the problem. So, after all, the answer was defended in one way. The student decided to add 5+0 to get 5, and then 60 + 60 +10 gives you 130 and 300+200 to get 500. Then finally, they said 130+500, which gives you 630, then add 5 to get 635. Now I know that was a lot, but after all, take a moment and ask yourself,” if you would have thought to work that problem that way or another way?”

While you take a minute to think about it and drink some of that good Tea, let me introduce our next Pre-service Teacher. Ms. Camryn, a Junior Pre-service teacher, also taught today. The problem she gave was 109+256, which is 365. She asked did anyone would like to defend the answer. Two people replied to define the answer to 365. The steps the first students decided to take was to add 56+9, which gives you 65. Then 100+200, which gives you 300, and lastly, add 300+65, which gives you 365. The second student decided to do 110+225, then 100+200+10+55, which gives you 365. Now I know that cup is empty because that was a lot of tea we gossiped about but stay tuned for more tea on the Hill next week.
