Eating Donuts While Spilling the Tea!!!!
HEEYY guys! I wanna first apologize for being gone for a couple of weeks. Just know it was for a good purpose. I hope all is going well. The sun is shining bright, and the temperature feels good outside. Come join me outside under the shade tree for a nice cup of sweet tea or a bottle of water. Get comfortable because this tea is about to be good. Make sure you grab all of your essentials. I brought donuts. Make sure you help yourself to them. This week for NT we are working on subtractions, “Do you know the difference.” As always, our students start with their fist to their heart because they are ready to start. The first problem has been shown 80-59, now we do have some defending going on so before you find the difference to this problem think about which answer are you defending 19 or 21? If you're defending 21, then you are correct. As I'm listing to our pre-service teachers' ideas of how they came up with 21, I want you to be sure to leave your way in the comment below!
Student one: Decomposed 59 to 50 + 9, then 80- 50 + 9, to 30 - 9 = 21
Student two: 80 - (59 + 1), to 80 - 60, then 20 + 1 = 21
Did you come up with any of these ways? If not, then I’ll be looking for your comment. Next problem we have is 81- 48, this time around everyone agreed on 33. Now since everyone agreed on 33 think of a way you would see the difference for finding 33. Before I list our pre-service teachers' ideas, be sure to make your way over to get some donuts, I do not want to take them home. As you make sure way over to the donuts, I’ll be posting their ideas below:
- Student one: Decomposed 81 to 80 and 48 +2= 50, next 80-50, then 30 + 3= 33
- Student two: 81- 48, took 1 and made 11 then change 8 to a 7 to get 33.
Now since this problem is complete did you come up with any of these ways to get 33? If not leave me a comment below because, I’m counting on you! I know you guys have been missing us, but we do have a surprise coming up! Not only do we have one Pre-service teacher doing NT, but we also have two this time. Starting off we have Miss Daisha Hicks, who is a senior here at Alabama A&M University. She led the class with, “asking the students to put their fist to their heart” she showed the problem 76- 67. Before we go any further this is her first-time teaching NT as well, now with that being said there's some defending going on. Which one are you picking 9 or 76(this was given as a way to defend)? When deciding your answer that you're going to pick, be sure to come up with the difference of how you see that answer. If you decided to pick 9 then you are correct as I proceed to give our pre- service teachers idea below:
- Student one: counted up by ones, 67,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75,76 to get the answer 9.
Student two: 67 + 3= 70, then 70+ 6= 76, she said after setting up her problem she knew 6 + 3=9
Student three: 76-67, took 7 turned it into a 6 and 6 into 16 to get 9
I know that was a lot and I'm pretty sure you're sipping your tea or surprised at some of the responses we received. Now it’s your turn to post your way of finding 9. Lastly, we have our last surprise which she’s a senior as well here at Alabama A&M University. This is her very first-time doing NT. Miss Krista Sikes led the class with fist to your heart if you are ready to start. She proceeded to show the problem 73- 49, now before you come up with the difference, we have a lot of numbers to defend. Which one are you picking, 23, 24, or 48? If you pick 24 then you are correct. I’m pretty sure your cup is getting empty so go ahead and refill it for the last ride as I proceed to give our pre-service teachers ideas below:
- Student one: 73-49, then 73-3=70, 49+ 1= 50, then 70-50= 20, last 20 + 4= 24
Student two: 60-40=20, then 13-9= 4, and 20 + 4=24
Did you come up with any of these ideas? If not it’s ok. I’ll be counting on you to leave your comment below. This tea session was the bomb.com! Now be on the lookout for next week for updates. I'm not sure if we will be able to hold a session next week. But as always, stay blessed, make sure you comment, and I'll be looking forward to seeing you again at the next tea session.
This has got to be the best tea that I’ve ever tasted. Wow, the flavors are indeed good, and I would like to add a touch of honey by defending the second NT, 81-48.
ReplyDeleteMy mental strategy was to use repeated subtraction, by 10, to get from 81-51. I instantly recognized that the difference was 30. Then, I counted backwards from 51 to obtain the difference of 3. Essentially, 81-51=30 and 51-48= 3; therefore 30+3 = 33 which is the difference between 81-48.

Awesome way using this strategy relates addition with subtraction!!
DeleteSo much fun getting to do my first number talks with the class. I would like to defend the first Number Talks, 80-59. I used the mental math strategy by taking 80-60 and I knew that was 20. I then added 1 because it was originally 59. My final answer was 21. -Krista Sikes
