Good evening.
I know school has not started yet, but I wanted to get into the habit of posting every week. The discussion today is about reflection. I am reflecting on various professional developments I have attended. Recently, I attended the Differentiated Instruction Conference; and this past week into this afternoon, I attended the Leadership Summit for my school district. DI conference was excellent. The presenters gave talks about pedagogy and assessments and differentiating your instruction to fit the needs of your learners. The conference had several sessions on Number Talks (NT). I attended these session to look for more ideas to take back to my school to use this fall. I am glad to say I am incorporate it in my intervention classes. The presenters discuss the benefits of using NT and how it opens up math discourse. The goal is to strategically and intentionally select problems to better help our students compute efficiently. I have done this with the grades three through five but not the lower grades. My plan is to work with the lower grades more frequently using dot images first and then tens frames.
The Leadership Summit, as always for the past 3 years, have been enlightening. My superintendent has challenged us to step outside of the box and develop our craft to the fullest. My goal from these blogs is to gain more insight best practices for my students and to challenge myself and my students to think mathematically in efficient ways. Also from these blogs, I will love to write a paper about my experiences and maybe even present. LOL!!! Before I can do this, I must plan and be proactive. Which leads me to the first PD-The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
The 7 Habits PD has helped me professionally, spiritually, physically, and relationally. One thing I took away was the importance of planning. I hate planning. I hate making list unless it is an anchor chart. However, I have learned if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So every week, I am suppose to write my goals and plan accordingly. I have slacked some, but I will plan tonight. Tomorrow morning, I will attend another conference so I will blog about this experience. Until then. Think mathematically.
Feel free to leave a comment.
